In David Brooks' essay "People Like Us", he argues that when considered as a whole America is in fact a culturally diverse nation, but when separated into communities, we are homogeneous. And yet, if you look around, it happens all the time. By raising rent and constructing more expensive buildings such as in places once a predominant area of street commerce and affordable housing, there has been a big push to diversify areas such as DUMBO and downtown Brooklyn. And younger people are distrusting because the world has been untrustworthy, and their distrust is an earned distrust. So, from your vantage point, what do you think makes a strong community? And in around 1981, he said, yeah, if the pattern holds, maybe there'll be another period of moral convulsion around 2020. Yeah, well, for the distrusted institutions, there was a clear inflection point and that was the time of Vietnam and Watergate. People are less often tied down to factories and mills, and they can search for places to live on the basis of cultural affinity. "People Like Us" begins by Brooks giving some examples of how people isolate themselves. But weavers get a thrill out of being with people completely unlike themselves and of making that human bond. Examples of Weavers in action. BROOKS: Yeah, I think that's exactly right. These events got me to think about why we were a predominately white community. It's sort of the group I grew up in, people who are defined by high education. They carve through what you thought was the floor of the basement of your soul and reveal a cavity below and then carve through that and reveal another cavity below. In the essay "People Like Us", Brooks states that maybe we are indeed a diverse nation when considered as a whole, but when you look at us on the community level, we are homogenous.

Yet it seems to me that this is the glue that holds us all together. It's appalling that evangelical Christians are practically absent from entire professions, such as academia, the media, and filmmaking. He points out that when we so deeply immerse ourselves in communities that reflect ourselves, we fail to see the other sides. My favorite illustration of this latter pattern comes from the first, noncontroversial chapter of The Bell Curve. It's striking that the institutions that talk the most about diversity often practice it the least.

Though constant with his expressiveness, it is this reliability that put a stop to his argument and taking it to another level. Our little knowledge about another's perspectives and opinions have created a barriers impenetrable to those who we don't see eye to eye with. Now David, I realized I haven't covered all of your career highlights, but for the sake of giving us more time to talk, welcome, and thank you for joining us on CaseyCast.
