I felt connected with each of them and everything that they stand for. And to top it all, it happens with any drink – gazing into someone's cappuccino mug, taro slushes, a thermos full of coffee – you name it, she can read your future in your beverage. Clairvoyants don't and this is the price of their gift. Her gift is also something she owes to her family. Fortunately, Vanessa has been able to limit the number of people exposed to her gift. That is not what was presented in the book. When costume designer Ariana Ricci leaves her groom at the altar, she seeks solace at the Palm Springs home of her great-aunt, a Texas-born Hollywood legend who began her career as an extra on the film Roman Holiday. Unlike her elegant Aunt Evelyn, the other clairvoyant in the family, Vanessa sees her ability to predict the future as a curse; particularly objectionable is the supernatural rule barring clairvoyants from finding true love. I liked Vanessa's complex relationship with her Aunt Evelyn and how that was explored over the course of the story. But Vanessa sees this ability as a burden not a gift and tries to suppress it as much as possible. She has a special gift of giving prophecies, but unlike her Aunt Evelyn who is a master clairvoyant, proud of being able to help people with her unusual ability to see their future, Vanessa is terrified of burdening the others with her visions of doom and gloom. She is also the oldest cousin of her generation who's yet to be married. But the tall, square-jawed man behind piles of fudge makes her want to linger, even savor the moment along with his chocolate-coffee-flavored confection. When Vanessa sees a fortune she can't help but blurt it out like when she ruins her cousin's wedding after foreseeing her divorced within a year. Also, I was attracted to explore the themes as hinted at in the blurb. Evelyn, too, comes across as a gorgeous, graceful, sophisticated but cold and negative person. The story does hit on some touristy spots like Versaille and some of the art museums, but they're not a big focus.
