FROM THE AUTHOR OF FRESH WATER FOR FLOWERS. Is a family merely one made up of a bloodline? Highly recommended with bells on. It seems fitting, then, that my choice of a novel this week is titled Fresh Water for Flowers by Valerie Perrin. Life has a nasty habit of getting complicated but in 1986 three ten-year-olds did not have the capacity to see what lay ahead for them. I haven't said very much about the plot – so here is the publishers' description: A POIGNANT RUNAWAY BESTSELLER full of French charm and memorable characters, Fresh Water for Flowers is Valérie Perrin's English debut. Foreword Magazine, Inc. is disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255. Perrin plaits the novel with the complex backstories of Violette, Phillipe, Julien, and Julien's mother and her lover. Violette is a great observer of human fragility and relationships with enormous empathy towards those she encounters. Death never takes a break. Hardly shocking that I prefer Winton's book, but I deeply appreciate both of them. Transferring this specifically to the School, we must remind our girls that while the situation is challenging, we can- and must- make the best of it. She brings the care to caretaker. "You must learn to be generous with your absence to those who haven't understood the importance of your presence.

Fresh Water For Flowers by Valérie Perrin will provide a reader with many moments of comfort, bliss, and a real reading delight. Fala za falą, czytelnika ogarnia poruszenie, zaraz rozbawienie, znów wzruszenie, głęboka zaduma… Valérie Perrin napisała opowieść, w której mieszają się słowa francuskich klasycznych piosenek, poetyckich wersów, mniejszych i większych życiowych mądrości, a wszystko to napisane z taką prostotą! Is there anyone who did not fully redeem themselves by the end and, if so, do you at least understand them better? It's a lot for one book, and the novel does sometimes falter under its own weight, but Perrin's eye is so compassionate, her characters so many-faceted, and the various mysteries she poses so intriguing that most readers will happily go along for the long ride toward a pleasingly romantic conclusion tempered by one last funeral. I often just sat and listened to her quiet story and felt privileged to be the one she talked to. "As I go to bed, I think how awful it would be to die in the middle of reading a good novel. Dessa tragédia nasce um mistério e o livro torna-se quase um policial, com as personagens principais a interrogarem as testemunhas e a tentar descobrir o que elas ocultam. How does a person move on from all consuming grief? " Once Julien enters to disrupt Violette's neatly ordered world, the author augments an already busy narrative with plot strands concerning Irène's decadeslong affair, the growing attraction between her son and the cemetery keeper, the tragic story of the Toussaints' daughter, and a chorus of new voices that soften our view of the not-quite-as-rotten-as-he-seemed Philippe. Then the male udders. Which is perhaps what Fresh Water For Flowers does, taking characters in unconventional circumstances and sharing their stories, watching how those stories shock, enlighten, end and change lives.

"His beauty, his youth smiled upon the world in which he would have lived. You're here for love of books, you live a life, you love and laugh and grieve, work and play. Fresh Water For Flowers Spoilers For Today
"Sleep, Nana, sleep, but may you still hear our childish laughter up there and highest Heaven". The protagonist Violette is a cemetery keeper who lives alone in a house on the premises of the cemetery she looks after. And many more... From the very beginning I had a feeling there is more to her life, and indeed there is. And with it, innumerable twists and turns, suspicions and revelations. However difficult her life may be, Violette is always drawn to the warmth and the light, those eternal forces that give her optimism and a will to survive.

Kirkus Reviews Issue: May 1, 2022. Grief, the human condition, deep resonance. The audio wasn't meant for me. She could pass for a 14-year-old or a 25-year-old... meet the gravediggers: Nono, Gaston, and Elvis..... meet Violette's dog: Elaine.. meet the undertakers: The Lucchini brothers: Pierre, Paul, and Jacques. Zevin's delight in her characters, their qualities, and their projects sprinkles a layer of fairy dust over the whole to enchant even those who have never played a video game in their lives, with instant cult status for those who have. Did you learn anything along the way? It is a Sunday afternoon kind of read. The story is heartbreakingly dark in one subplot in which Perrin displays great skill as a writer of mystery and suspense.
I think I'm the minority on this one. The book is mostly maudlin, unbelievable, contrived, ridiculously ridiculous. I was sowing myself. When baby Leonine arrives, Violette cherishes her until her darling daughter dies during what ought to have been a carefree excursion to sleep away camp organized by her disdainful and snooty social-climbing in-laws. As the novel progresses we learn snippets about who she is, all done with very subtle and poignantly depicted scenes. I laughed and cried in every chapter, started highlighting passages, then gave up when I saw there was something on every page. But seriously: Rarely have I read a book that juggles so many stories and so many interlocking plot lines and still makes sense and is easy to track while reading. I don't want to say much about the story as you have to read it to understand it.
Violette Touissant is the reclusive cemetery keeper at Brancon-en-Chalon, a position she acquired after years working as a level crossing keeper. And maybe this is a case of shooting the messenger, but I also cannot get on board with her apparent belief of what makes a perfect man. Abandoned by her husband years ago she spends her days taking great care of the cemetery, growing flowers, cleaning headstones, reading epitaphs and meeting people to whom she provides comfort in their times of bereavement and distress. Those neighbours she lives among are the dead, while she lives in the heaven of the living, at the mid-range of life having been through plenty of pain and suffering to get there.
