I don't understand why Hislop didn't just write the Ramirez family story; the fact that she needed to ensconce it in a modern envelope and then make that modern envelope so shallow diminished the rest of it. "The Return" begins in recent times in England. It was brilliant to have this overlay of history and culture and The Return enriched our experience of this enchanted city. His instant fame makes Aiyi's club once again the hottest spot in Shanghai. The last part of the novel takes readers back to present day England and Sonia must make a difficult choice after making some surprising revelations.
