Right away, when this book opened up with the main characters walking into an immediately escalating scene with a police officer, I knew I was in for an emotional ride. Summary: When Marvin Johnson's twin, Tyler, goes to a party, Marvin decides to tag along to keep an eye on his brother. Tyler is different and similar to him, two sides of the same coin. Originally I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars but after a few days, I was about to process my thoughts and critique the book better. And "Tyler Johnson Was Here" read like a first draft of a book. I just think the story, at its core will hit very close to home. I would have liked to have gotten a better sense of his character, because that might have made me like him more. This book is the gritty version of that novel's story, the version I think people need to hear. Also we have Marvin's mother call the police to report her son missing, but we find out later on that Tyler is shot by a cop that had to happen the same night he went missing. Marvin is truly an inspirational character.

I think the dialogue is pretty witty and sounds like black southern teenagers haha, I never felt like they were just characters in a book because some teens talk like that in real life. But someone is watching, and Pip may be in more danger than she realizes. But one cannot ignore that there are also many, whose prejudice has provoked them to cause irreparable damage and rarely face the consequences. In German, there is a saying "Die Polizei - dein Freund und Helfer" (the police - your friend and helper) and I lived by this. Police brutality is very much present and this depiction of it was incredibly powerful. This book can truly provoke emotions from the reader and I was definitely moved. Jay Coles writes with heart and passion, practically pleading with the world to redress anti-black police brutality. But I don't have one thing that I can really use as a talking point for the book that differentiates it from some of the others that I wished it had (though the cover is a start! ) I loved all the references to past television show A Different World. A story about police brutality, focused around a boy whose brother is shot by a police officer. "Exploring the current climate of police brutality and viral culture, this harrowing YA effort is based on its author's own experiences with tragedy and loss, a personal touch felt across every page. It didn't make me as angry as I thought it would but it still made me super sad. This was tough to read, but it was very eye opening and I am glad that I was able to read about this type of experience. It's not the first time I am tackling the issue of police brutality through fiction on my blog. This was a very personal story, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a realistic, emotional book about struggling through racism and police brutality. The fact that this is reality for so many black teens in America is absolutely horrifying. Please allow this novel to stand on it's own two feet--because it's strong enough do so--despite it's flaws.

I mean, I feel like if that happened in real life you could report someone. The actual ending is great, don't get me wrong, but I got the sense that Jay Coles tried to wrap everything up as best he could, but he could have done it many times. Hey there, book lover. If someone told sixth-grade-me that this many books I picked up would have casually sapphic side characters and all-black casts, I would definitely not have believed them. I really didn't like Marvin that much.

It was stuff like that kept taking me out of the story. Jackson's debut is well-executed and surprises readers with a connective web of interesting characters and motives. But yeah nope, it just didn't cut it for me. I liked the characters just fine, but there were times when the characterizations seemed a bit off for me.
I really like all of these kids. While they're at the party, some shady stuff goes down, and Marvin has no idea of what happened to Tyler. He shouts, and I flinch a bit. I felt that the characters could've used more fleshing out. We're glad you found a book that interests you! Jay Coles is a voice we need in YA today, and you bet your ass I am going to read this book. I also wanted to know more about Marvin and Tyler's Dad; I liked him and his parts, and I feel like he deserved to be involved more in the story.
