I enjoyed the book as a mystery, but sometimes got timelines and characters confused. Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne's first encounter with Clare Fergusson was in the hospital emergency room on a freezing December night. Claire not only has the normal first time mother's angst, but is also worried that her drinking during the first trimester of her pregnancy might have caused Ethan to have fetal alcohol syndrome. After the fact, I wish this one had been hidden from mine. This information about One Was a Soldier was first featured. All Mortal Flesh (2006). The only scene that showed Clare & Russ in their familiar relationship was told in flashback during one of the bleakest parts of the story. The plot takes surprising twists, leading readers to unexpected revelations while building the suspense and taking the story in unpredictable directions. While there is some indication that there is also a storyline that will continue between Russ's mother and the former Chief of Police, it is not as obvious and not so much of a cliffhanger as a suggestion. Readers will relish this story's many captivating, powerful, and compelling layers. The investigator has the fatal flaw of any poor detective—tunnel vision. Twenty years later a similar death is discovered, and once again the police are baffled.
Russ is threatened with losing his job shortly... the powers that be want to close down the local police station, putting him and his team on the unemployment line. The mystery that was the undercard in this novel was really pretty straightforward to suss out and Spencer-Fleming's big plot twists felt fairly telegraphed. Maggie D'arcy, book 1). The mystery is well plotted and moves at a good pace, with the book pulling you back into it if you put it down for any length of time.
Now my TBR list has just expanded expediently and the sad news is there's a ten week wait on the ebook loans from my library. This book really frustrated me. Her books have been shortlisted for the Edgar, and Romantic Times RC awards. I personally dislike this type of ending where the reader must get the next book in the series in order to know if and how things "work out". I'm reading the first in the series now.
