The feminist movement was at its height when ISOYG was made in 1978, with a plethora of conferences and marches through cities protesting about rape, domestic violence and unequal pay; and arguably its weakest at the time of The Accused, when Thatcherism had more or less destroyed the left and weakened feminism alongside it. So in that sense, Monroe has done something new and different with the I Spit on Your Grave concept. Don't get me wrong, there are some pretty creative and brutal deaths here but they are so over the top, complex, extravagant and unbelievable that it just kind of seems laughable, which takes away from the film since clearly that's not what they were going for. Either way though, nothing shown here is terribly shocking and if you've seen your fair share of violent films, you should be fine. And credit is due the guys playing the tormentors as well, because they did good job with their roles as well (despite it being the roles of perverse deviants). Of course, it's unlikely that anyone who hasn't enjoyed the previous installments of this franchise spun off from the 1978 cult favorite will subject themselves to this edition, in which Sarah Butler reprises her role from the 2010 version. Watch it if you liked the film, or not. Exactly like the first, with a few narrative details altered but with the logical holes in the plot as massively absurd as ever. Uggh, so I finally sat down to see just how depraved this was, and it absolutely lives up to its reputation. It was wickedly awesome! Once she has been taken advantage of by the kidnappers, (who have taken the time to kidnap an American girl and transport her thousands of miles in order to sell her to rich freaks), they decide to bury her alive in the basement. Whereas The Accused serves as a warning to men who do nothing to stop rape, the punishment they receive in the film is highly unlikely to happen in reality. What I admire the most is the almost documentary feel of the film.
As with the original film, the rape scene is graphic and extended -- actually, there are a couple of scenes, as Jennifer escapes only to fall back into the malfeasants' clutches again. I wonder how many tickets that statement alone sold? The rapists were convicted but the onlookers acquitted. Despite that superlative, the picture quickly disappeared, later to be semi-resurrected by the usual small cult of admirers/apologists, offering the usual arguments: The explicitness is disgusting because rape is disgusting, and (ain't it ingenious) the audience is meant to feel complicit in the offence.
Overall, I'd say it's worth a watch. It was in a weird way, perfect brutality caught on film. But be warned; this movie is brutal. There is an iconic shot of Jennifer on a rock after the rapists leave that has her slumped and almost lifeless on top of it. Solid performances, awesome death scenes and an intense and gripping first half make this one worth a watch. It does not rely on the law of the land, but on a woman being pushed too far and deciding enough is enough. Leaving her for dead, Jennifer comes back and takes revenge on those who wronged her.
