The film would have benefited from a longer script, as some moments are a tad rushed, it would've been nice to spend a little longer with the characters. He keeps his secrets hidden for as long as possible, but eventually the past always catches up. A History Of Violence is just a so-so film.

A History Of Violence Opening Scene
It contains moments of sharp, vicious mayhem and there is a body count. Maria Bello is awful in her role and is difficult to watch and the young teenager goes from doing an alright job to becoming worse as the film goes on. "None of it, " says the baffled lawman. But the ending is even lamer than War of the Worlds which I had previously thought was the worst ending ever. The movie went in 10 different directions but didn't bother I was a big believer in the metacritic system before this. When's the last time you saw Mr. Olympia working at Mel's diner? But that being said overall, "A History of Violence" is above par entertainment, and despite it's flaws it's an important piece of filmmaking, one that only further improved the director's already impressive career. Cronenberg provides some of the most ambitious and tightest directing of all his later films, doing a great job pulling no punches and keeping the tension going, keeping it remarkably and uncharacteristically straight. A History of Violence certainly fits that bill. Switchblade Sisters is a podcast providing deep cuts on genre flicks from a female perspective. From there the story unravels before your very eyes with more holes in the story than Carter has little liver pills or Swiss Cheese? From apehood to rape to the miriad abuses of power, the human race is still in its infancy and we're still dealing with all this stuff.
There really isn't much going on here. This is the story of one man, the story of one family and the story of "A History of Violence". All this upsets the serenity of the Stall family existence and Tom`s wife; Edie (Maria Bello) begins to question whether her husband is really the man she thinks he is. And, as Scott wrote, the story also implies some sort of genetic predisposition for violence in Jack. What makes each of us who we are? But after that opening shot, the movie halts sharply and abruptly, Josh Olson's (who received multiple nominations for this) script is a bit on the jumbled side, establishing the Stall family is an endurance test for the first 20 minutes or so; it's quite deliberate in it's execution, and in the beginning it feels forced, especially the dialogue which is clunky and overdramatic. I found myself caring about each character and From what I understand, this movie was based on a graphic novel so it definitely has that comic book feel. Upon looking at the recognition Tom received for his bravery at the diner, his reaction to this publicity indicates that he is hesitant about the situation, suggesting that there may be more to his life than meets the eye. I`ve read a few reviews on this movie and many seem to be banging on about how good Mortensen is.
History Of Violence Final Scene
It was slow and predictable. As his camera moves in closer and amid the panting and ouch-worthy thumping against the wooden stairs, Mr. Cronenberg maintains a dead-eye, presentational perspective here, never assuming either character's point of view. The gore is graphic but the best thing about A History of Violence is Mortensen's performance. That's the best i could describe this film.
They add a main charater with no background near the end just to kill him. Certainly Tom's violent past as Joey enables him to protect his family from extreme danger. The background score is decent, the sound effects are sharp and aptly loud, the art designing may not be in its A game, the cinematography is stunning and so is its fine editing. So I check out what the critics and others are saying and try to give the pros their respect I don't get to the theater as much anymore, but when I do I want my precious time, not to mention almost ten bucks a ticket, to be worth it. Based on a graphic novel created by John Wagner and Vince Locke, David Cronenberg's A History of Violence finished shooting in 2004. While Tom seems puzzled, Carl's actions suggest that the quiet man pouring coffee at the diner may have a dark and violent past he isn't eager to share with others -- as well as some old scores that haven't been settled. Not terribly predictable, enough twists and turns, done without beating one over the head with some moral perspective, which is refreshing. There are no words to describe how bad this movie truly is. I, obviously, did not care for it -- and no, I'm not illiterate or oblivious. Is he in the witness protection program? In actuality, makeup was used to downplay the number of bruises Bello received from filming the scene. It was also nominated for adapted screenplay.

Although uncredited, David Cronenberg contributed to the final shooting draft of the screenplay. A car approaches the house crunching gravel. Cronenberg has found his James Stewart in Viggo Mortensen; his performance is absolutely mesmerizing. What we are left with is a family who has to pick up the pieces and try to deal with the horrible truth revealed to them. If you thought that was an You've got to be kidding. This film illustrates several ideas as suggested by the title. Even so, it is a testament to his vision as well as his film's visceral intensity that this fabrication didn't seem totally off the wall. I had a unfulfilled feeling in me watching this movie. The pacing is slow, the "suspense" is tedious, and there is nothing "deep" to be had. We saw this movie in London (so the cut may have been different than in the US) because we love Viggo Mortenson! When confronted by Carl, he not only denies being Joey, but claims to have never been in Philadelphia. I'm sorry, if you think this movie is predictable and boring, then you weren't watching the same movie as I was.
Whoever wrote that part of the script can feel slightly less bad about his lack of talent by comparing himself to the lumpen who shot the scene. Based on the evidence of his eyes, the man who calls himself Tom Stall is actually Joey Cusack, an ex-killer from Philadelphia. Tom`s son Jack (Ashton Holmes) is also experiencing the pitfalls of his father`s fame at the hands of bully Bobby (Kyle Schmid), until he too discovers he has the knack of turning the tables on someone. I'm a big fan of Viggo Mortensen & Ed Harris, but I thought this movie stunk big-time. The directing of it is pretty shabby also, at one point cutting to a shot or the bottom of the stair case where you can see on leg moving slightly. Harris is always fun to watch and I loved Mortensen as the lead.
Cronenberg appeared with him in Falling (2020), which Mortensen also directed. This movie is a commentary on how we, as people, are both repulsed and exhilarated by violence. I saw a deleted scene which is known as "Scene 44" for some bizarre reason which features a dream sequence in the diner, where Fogarty tells Tom he will kill him and his family which leads him to kill him with a shotgun and then he shoots back.
