The chateau is so large that at first Rainsford thinks he is seeing a mirage. The setting in The Most Dangerous Game is important because it creates a sense of danger through its unknown jungle. What Is the Setting of "The Most Dangerous Game"? Rainsford charts a complicated course through the jungle including doubling back on his previous courses. Upon meeting, Rainsford is at first excited to meet a fellow hunter, but as time goes on, he realizes the Russian general doesn't hunt animals. When Rainsford asks Zaroff how he gets so many victims onto the island, he explains that the island draws many on its own but that he has also created a channel of sharp-edged rocks that often cause sailors to get thrown off course.
