I'm thrilled to welcome C. Tudor to CBTB today to discuss her brand-new release, THE HIDING PLACE! At about 350 pages, I think this is a book that anybody could pick up at any given time. She is definitely well on her way to being a British literary superstar. Thriller mixed with a little horror, this story takes the reader down a dark and eerie path; this was just the right amount of scary to spook the reader and to keep them on the edge of their seat. She definitely has a sinister vibe that defines this mystery novel for me, but adds elements of horror. There's a theme of bullying in The Taking of Annie Thorne and Tudor doesn't shy away from or sugarcoat the harshness of the subject and the effect that it has on those involved. Overall a 5* read for me, and I will definitely be picking up the author's future books too. I think this is the best book I have read for a while and strongly recommend it if you like a twisty, creepy tale. ''TERRIFIC IN EVERY WAY'' LEE CHILD.

Fast forward 25 years, in debt, desperate and lured by a mysterious email echoing the past, Joe has come back to the village where he grew up. Please note there may be some spoilers! But more than that, on a subconscious level and due to the past, Joe was, one day, always going to return to Arnhill as you can't escape your past and also, the past shapes the present. From the shocking opening to the explosive finale, The Taking of Annie Thorne is a chilling page-turner that will leave you checking the locks at night. " I think this is better than The Chalk Man, in that the characters were all fab, including psycho Gloria! Bullies, gangsters, friends, teenage crushes all feature along with a sense of nostalgia, juvenile misadventure and folklore, as well as sheer terror. For me, the worst bit would have to be that once the story changed course it began to feel like a really bad retelling and I think the original had a lot more involved with it. Joe Thorne has returned to the Nottinghamshire village of Arnhill years after he left it.
"Dark and creeping and utterly unpredictable, The Taking of Annie Thorne is another triumph of a novel by C J Tudor. Pub Date 22 Aug 2019 | Archive Date 14 Sep 2020. For a mystery/thriller this book contains fantasy aspects and no doubt that will be unpalatable to those wanting a no nonsense book from the genre, my advice would be to give it a shot anyway – I think the book is worth it. It's happening again' A shiver down the spine... Dreda Say Mitchell; Ryan Carter. Something is clearly not right in Arnhill and with Joe's return, old memories are dredged up and old horrors are returned to. It's gory at times (the author does body-horror unnervingly well) but still remains clever. When her peers were reading Judy Blume, she was devouring Stephen King and James Herbert. C. Tudor's debut novel, The Chalk Man, was one of my favourite books of 2018. Arnhill is an old mining town and CJ Tudor creates the perfect visual of a dark and dreary place, a town where there is little hope and where a constant shadow lurks over the town. As for the twists and turns of the story nothing surprised me more than that ending!
The Taking Of Annie Thorne By Cj Tudor
I enjoyed the way it went from then and now to tell the story. I would not call this book a thriller. In terms of criticisms. "With The Hiding Place, CJ Tudor has proven that she is a true master at creating perfectly dark, highly propulsive, and tightly coiled mysteries that are utterly impossible to put down. Despite the family tragedy that haunts his childhood, he returns to his childhood home for less than virtuous reasons and is immediately presented as a con artist.
A murder scene with a cryptic message left in bold red letters on the wall. Last year's debut novel by The Chalk Man was such a memorable, creepy and menacing read, combining mystery with horror, a winning combination in my eyes. The powers of a child's imagination fuels this novel but sometimes the monster might be real and it haunts them still. Clever horror/thriller with a touch of the supernatural. The Chalk Man is her first novel. Twenty five years ago he and four friends were involved in something they'd all rather forget. I wish I would have enjoyed this one, but there was a definite disconnect between me, the characters and the story. From page one, the reader is pulled in with a gathering sense of dread, and taken on an addictive, thrilling ride to the very last page. "

It's really well written, and I can't wait for the next book by this author. But, it is that added attention to detail on the part of Tudor and the feeling that you get as a reader from them and the book on a whole that makes you realise that you are reading something extra special. I've had C. Tudors book 'The Chalk Man' since it's release day but unfortunately, I've never found the time to read it, after reading this book though I am making reading it a priority. This was the year his life started to spiral out of control. Much of this is, I think, due to the inviting nature of the rest of the novel which grabs you and doesn't let go. They are the deepest part of the darkness. I actually finished it at half 2 in the morning because I couldn't sleep until I knew how it ended. CJ Tudor is adept at tapping into the whole horror vibe; the creeping sense of 'wrongness', the eerie events and sudden, brutal scenes - but for me, her real strength lies in combining characters with horrible situations. They either had these dark undertones or more of a softer side to them under hard shells. I've never really liked the term 'page-turner' but this definitely falls into that category. All of the characters in the book were stongly developed and the story slowly unravels as you read on but twists away from where you thought it was taking you. I think the biggest problem with this book was that it started off in one direction but then ended up going off in a completely different direction. Around this homage, Tudor has created a normal, believable world, peopled by normal, identifiable characters, from the troubled Joe Thorne, to his fellow teachers, the obnoxious Hurst, and Gloria, the pint-sized blonde bombshell with a penchant for torture and murder.
