David Robert Mitchell caught the film world's attention with his taut, contemporary and thoroughly effective horror It Follows, so hopes were exceedingly high for his follow-up film, Under the Silver Lake. But the Girl appears and following her traces will lead him to a maze of cereal-boxes-treasure hunt, drugs in private parties, a too-good-to-be-true-rock star and a hobo king among others. Sometimes he has listless and genial sex with a friend (Riki Lindhome) who shows up after acting gigs in a dirndl or a nurse's costume, bearing sushi. All of these events leak into Sam's brain, and he follows these clues no matter how tenuous, to try to find Sarah. But it is not exactly like anything but itself. Cinematographer Mike Gioulakis shoots the film with a mix of Hitchcockian angles, the 360 camera pans (which he also used in Mitchell's previous film), and the alluring surrealism of Inherent Vice. Around the point where Sam follows his trail of clues to an underground party and encounters three characters standing drunk at Hitchcock's grave, I suddenly got what the point was, and then had to go back and realign my thinking about the films first hour and prepare myself for what was to come. He's made a hipster conspiracy thriller about a guy who goes so far down an existential rabbit hole that it sucked Mitchell down with him. But one day a new girl appears in the neighbour, sexy and inviting. If only he could figure out what it all means…. It's fitting that during a key scene at a party, a bystander mutters about a twelve-year old new media star "She's an old soul who has really captured the zeitgeist, " the way in which fame works in the internet media bubble is filled with absurd statements like this, largely met with a shrug, and lost in the onslaught of content. Garfield plays the lead as a gangly doofus with an obsessive streak. The intense paranoia that can set in once you start to suspect all those things aren't just banal but actually intended to make you act and think a certain way is a feature of postmodern fiction stretching through the work of Thomas Pynchon to today, and Under the Silver Lake taps into that paranoia and makes it its subject.
The second conspiracy is that of the Owl's Kiss. Here Under the Silver Lake can only muster a performative yawn. Back in 2015, David Robert Mitchell burst onto the Hollywood scene with It Follows. Sam (Andrew Garfield) is a disenchanted 33-year-old who discovers a mysterious woman, Sarah (Riley Keough), frolicking in his apartment's swimming pool. A story about some mystery in a hipster neighbour of Los Angeles could be a great one, and the writers there knew that but just went over their head writing the film. Except it isn't, not really, neither for him nor the viewer. I'm particularly looking for more films that offer a similar viewing experience, but would settle for book recommendations (recommendations for both would be great! I thought the whole drama started off well but got lost in all the pieces of the maze that is the synopsis. Sam's best friend complains that in postmodernity There are no mysteries any more, and true to this Under the Silver Lake takes us on a two hour plus journey through mysteries that aren't really mysteries, with a gormless protagonist who's convinced that because of his methods, they must be. Sam hangs around smoking, taking calls from his mom, indolently watching through binoculars his older female neighbour walk around on her balcony semi-nude, jerking off, sometimes having sex with an actor friend-with-benefits who occasionally stops by in a cute audition costume. Sam is obsessed with a local free fanzine where a comic artist details his struggles and some awful secret which is where the film takes its title from. It's exposure for exposure's sake, issues reduced to information, and Mitchell plays it all basic because it is.

And then as we swept through the convoluted narrative it all seem to be a rehash of one of Thomas Pynchon's 1960s conspiracy theory novels…but, I have to admit, having seen Under the Silver Lake over a week ago I can't remember what actually happened, I only have a sense of a general atmosphere. In Sedgwick, "What does knowledge do—the pursuit of it, the having and exposing of it, the receiving again of knowledge of what one already knows? Along with finding her entire apartment empty, Sam finds a symbol painted on the wall.
The score, by chip-tune maestro Disasterpeace, is redolent of 1950s noirs, which are clearly just a few of Mitchell's favourite things. We love intrigue, and Under the Silver Lake, the most recent film from David Robert Mitchell, understands this clearly, and he uses this to not only drive the protagonist through the film but also draw the audience into the story of the film and the conspiracies it contains. UNDER THE SILVER LAKE ★★. And he doesn't know how to do anything without playing a part. A defenestrated squirrel falls from the sky. Sam is so desperate for something new, something to give his life meaning and purpose after a possible hinted heartbreak that he starts to see patterns that just aren't there, it's just denial of a slow-moving nervous breakdown filled with distractions. Around the same time, Sam discovers the hand-made zine that gives the movie its title, which digs into the arcane lore of the Silver Lake area, generating some cool animated interludes courtesy of illustrator Milo Neuman.
