Okay so now that's out of the way: the chapters are split between Mateo and Rufus and their voices were so different, really contrasting, and yet I fell in love with both of them. Silvera keeps up the sci-fi mystery from the first book but giving you almost zero details on how they know who is going to die. When Mateo receives the dreaded call from Death-Cast, informing him that today will be his last, he doesn't know where to begin. Readers move through a first person POV of both Mateo and Rufus from the moment they get their Death-Cast call to their deaths. Having just arrived in N. Y. C. after moving out of his strict religious parents' house in Arizona, Valentino, eager to discover the city, ventures into Times Square, where Death-Cast prepares to celebrate its launch. If you enjoyed the format of the story in They Both Die at the End, you'll definitely enjoy this prequel. I was originally attached and involved as the creator and executive producer, but as of very recently, I have stepped away from the show. It was as if the book would never have existed without him in the first place. While Rufus can be a bit selfish and intense with feelings, Mateo is very selfless and caring. Orion's dynamic, and bond, with his best friend Dalma and her family prove just that. I've always said that They Both Die at the End, and now The First to Die at the End, hold a rare comfort within them; it's not a jagged, distressing sadness, but a warm, inevitable one. Moving, breathtaking, captivating and heartbreaking all in one neat package. What I love so much about the Death-Cast stories is that they are exactly that, so very real. While I enjoyed the story and the characters, it did feel like the story lagged a bit in the middle. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I'm glad Silvera returned to the Death-Cast universe. I'm just not a cryer of books or movies.

I think in this book we dive deep into the Death-Cast and it's significance. Though neither boy is certain how the day will end, they know they want to spend it together… even if that means their goodbye will be heartbreaking. It was an obvious cash grab from the start. Rufus is busy beating up his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend when he gets the call.

Silvera starts at the very beginning of Death-cast and how the first 'Decker's life is intertwined with others. However, she survived one time after another because she told herself that the call was just some joke. There's the inevitability of everything ending, but also the thrilling sensation of the path they're taking until the moment comes. Mateo was so nervous, anxious and concerned about everything whereas Rufus was practical but caring.
At moments, tears crept into my eyes and streamed down my cheeks. Apart from Valentino and his twin sister, who are presumed White, most of the characters are Latine, including White-passing Orion, whose family is Puerto Rican. Until then, this prequel is just what fans wanted, a return to the alternate-universe New York, where even on your last day alive, you can find friendship and love. Unlike Orion, Valentino Prince, a model on the verge of his national debut, has no reason to anticipate Death-Cast's call and isn't sure if he believes the company's claims.
Synopsis: On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They're going to die today. But some who come back are no longer human. Therefore reading the tiny links in this story to characters like Mateo and Rufus etc makes their story to come even more heartbreaking and this one all the more poignant, too.
