In terms of criticisms. ''Written with such skill it''s hard to believe this is only her second book. Sinister, creepy and told with impressive skill, C. J Tudor has done it yet again in her second book, following on from the cult favourite The Chalk Man released earlier this year. I really enjoyed The Chalk Man and personally I think The Taking Of Annie Thorne is even better. This time last year I wasn't reading anywhere near as much as usual. Yet, I managed to devour this book in a handful of days at a time when that wasn't really the norm for me. Little has changed in Arnhill, and Joe finds himself locking horns with some of the hard men he used to hang around with, and who are now bigshots in the local community. With any mystery or thriller, one of the greatest aspects of this kind of narrative is the characters and their backstory. After 48 hours she returned but she wasn't the same. From page one, the reader is pulled in with a gathering sense of dread, and taken on an addictive, thrilling ride to the very last page. " The author used a single perspective in this novel, and I think it worked very beautifully. Joe Throne has been away from Arnhill where he grew up with his family for a while.
The Taking Of Annie Thorne Movie
Once more we have the fright associated with children who in some way have strayed from what is right, even what is real. CJ Tudor is a brilliant storyteller. Like The Chalk Man, the story jumps between past and present, which is actually something I really like in a book. He grew up in Arnhill. The Taking of Annie Thorne pays homage to King's Pet Sematary (although readers will be pleased to hear that no cats were harmed in the making of this novel), replacing the Indian tribe with an ancient druidic civilisation and transplanting the horror to the English Midlands.
Released – 21st February 2019. The mine has closed. With rave reviews across the board, The Chalk Man became a huge success leading to great expectations for CJ Tudor's next book…. At the end of the book I did have some unanswered questions, mostly about all the spooky stuff, which did irk me for a little while. As a whole, this novel was a gripping tale on chasing ghosts. Amina Madadi (ⴰⵎⵉⵏⴰ).
The Taking Of Annie Thorne Cj Tudor Joinedup# 101
A gambling addict, he is in serious debt to serious people, and sees his return to Arnhill as a chance to escape briefly, get his head together, and potentially earn enough money to take him out of the red. As a fan of The Chalk Man, I wasn't disappointed by The Taking of Annie Thorne. Indeed, the Head is pleased to give him the job. Where his eight year old sister Annie disappeared for forty-eight hours - and then she came back.
C. J. Tudor was born in Salisbury and grew up in Nottingham, and has recently moved to Kent with her partner and young daughter. She has her own style and she is comfortable with it. For a mystery/thriller this book contains fantasy aspects and no doubt that will be unpalatable to those wanting a no nonsense book from the genre, my advice would be to give it a shot anyway – I think the book is worth it. Like with the rest of the book, the horror is (mostly) understated but it is a nightmare's nightmare and leaves you with a lingering sense of disquiet that ends The Taking of Annie Throne on an unsettling and unforgettable note. C. J. Tudor (CJTudorOfficial). And then she came back. Arnhill is a shadow of its former self. Another creepy offering from this author. Personalities recur through the generations. Thank you NetGalley and Penguin UK - Michael Joseph for this ARC.
The Taking Of Annie Thorne By Cj Tudor
The setting of Arnhill is so well created. After reading the first few pages of this book, I already have a strong feeling that this book is darker and creepier than The Chalk Man. Annie wasn't Annie anymore. There are glimmers of responsibility seen, particularly when he gets a job as a teacher, but it is the character's inability to face up to his actions that causes drama and conflict. It's a perfect device to help build up the suspense and mystery which is retained. And here's the thing, this book is all about the building of the suspense and the creation of a spine-chilling atmosphere, forcing you, the reader, to your own conclusions. What he is, however, is a compelling character who is ably assisted in both timelines by a stellar cast of supporting characters that drive the story forward as the mystery deepens. When her peers were reading Judy Blume, she was devouring Stephen King and James Herbert.
The story goes back and forth between past and present but not in an obtrusive way. I enjoyed myself immensely and this book is a 5 star read. I don't think I would recommend The Taking of Annie Thorne, there are better books out there and they all contain better characters and better mythology running through them. But, strangely enough, you see how they are human - full of flaws and traumas -, and how certain situations have made them become what they are. She wasn't my Annie. Because for Joe, the worst moment of his life wasn't the day his sister went missing. Michael Joseph | 2019 (21 February) | 346p | Review copy and bought copy | Buy the book. In addition he has had an anonymous email: 'I know what happened to your sister. With its compelling characters and witty writing, it grips from the very first page. "
The Taking Of Annie Thorne
The Taking of Annie Thorne is described as 'the spine-tingling new thriller to keep you up all night' and I would have to agree. Secondary school feels like how school was, and a small village with a dark secret, feels exactly like that. This was where he grew up. The chalk man has been my favorite novel of 2018 and was so excited to be allowed to read THE TAKING OF ANNIE THORN. Up to this point, life for the Thorne family, had it's ups and downs and for Joe his school days were an unhappy period in his young life. This is a compelling novel to read, particularly, I think, by lamplight, late into the night. The writing is very simple and often just annoying. Witty and compelling all at once, The Hiding Place is a must read page-turner! " Twenty five years later Joe is back in the small ex-mining village of Arnhill. I did have some sympathy for Joe, life hasn't been easy especially after the incident when his sister disappeared, but I did want to give him a shake. I was drawn into the story immediately. Actually, just like The Chalk Man, you want to talk about SO MUCH of this book, your brain frantically left trying to figure out the mysteries and how you feel about the characters (most of whom are pretty unlikeable). Even the ending, which is abrupt and shocking, would translate brilliantly to the screen – lingering in the mind long after the book has concluded. Before this, however, Joe received an anonymous and mysterious email telling him that "I know what happened to your sister.
There was something missing throughout this book, and a lot had to do with the fact that there was no context for anything that was happening with the characters or what they had found. Yet another cracker from C J Tudor! As the main character, Joe isn't the most likeable sort, he's not a hero, he isn't a good guy either nor is he a bad guy, He's just a guy, an 'average Joe' if you will. My giddy aunt – do not annoy this author, she will write you into one of her stories and make you suffer. In The Taking of Annie Thorne Tudor's writing seems more self-assured and honed. The Taking of Annie Thorne is the follow-up to C. J. Tudor's stunning debut novel The Chalk Man, which I reviewed on this blog last year. Joe was a great character, complex, deceptive but also strong and enduring.
The Taking Of Annie Thorne Unlimited Acces
One that is scarred, secretive and full of foreboding. As an adult, Joe tried to push the past behind him but he knew he couldn't get away forever and with mounting gambling debts hanging over his head and the strange email, Joe knew that it was time to lay the past to rest. Foils which help to move Joe's creepy journey along through the many twists and turns that you can't see coming, as he searches for answers and redemption. As King says, if you like his books, then you'll like this.
Nothing is revealed too early, keeping us on our toes as to what happens – in both timelines! It's creepy, and if you love horror or scary films you'll love this! The character of Annie Thorne is both charming and then, on her return, deeply unsettling. I am not a very big fan of S. King, I don't really enjoy his writing style, but when I read C. Tudor's book, WOW, it has the S. King 's vibe, it is compact, and not dragged unnecessarily. Joe has a lot of skeletons in his closet and you never see where the next one will pop out.
But his return to the village is bringing the past back to haunt them all. 'I know what happened to your sister. I enjoyed the way you learn about Joe's life, past and present, then bit by bit through flashbacks you also find out just what happened to 8 year old Annie when she went missing all those years ago. You'll spot some excellent "easter eggs" in this book which I loved and instantly wanted to tweet about them but then couldn't because spoilers, so that was frustratingly brilliant. Sender: Subject: Annie 'I know what happened to your sister. Joe turns out to be a character with varying shades of grey when it comes to morality. I found it fascinating and revolting. I'm thrilled to welcome C. Tudor to CBTB today to discuss her brand-new release, THE HIDING PLACE!
