When Jude, as an adult, is adopted by his favorite Harvard law professor, his friends join him for Thanksgiving in Cambridge every year. With the inclusion of some coincidences, I can't give this book 5 stars, but it is still a good read. However, despite Anna and some others being quite one-dimensional characters, I enjoyed the book more as it went on and found it entertaining to the end. For me anyway, it slightly edges over The Island, which is not altogether a bad thing. The place is the Greek island of Cephallonia, where gods once dabbled in the affairs of men, and the local saint periodically rises from his sarcophagus to cure the mad.

I didn't expect an historic novel but this romantic novel changes smoothly. But she also finds herself unexpectedly - and uncontrollably - falling in love with Hemingway, a man on his way to becoming a legend. Having read The Thread I was really looking forward to reading this book but it didn't grab me in the same way I'm afraid. By White rose on 03-24-17. The story of Mercedes the young Spanish girl whos love of dance and a young guitarist named Javier takes her into danger during a war which has destroyed her family is excellent but I finished the book feeling I'd missed some of the crucial elements because Hislop's explanation of the history of the war wasn't gripping enough to keep me reading every single word. This Must Be the Place. But once Sonia returned to Granada and listened to Miguel, the cafe owner, talk about the past over coffee, I was hooked. But like science, life is unpredictable. Stigma and scandal need to be confronted and somehow, for those impacted, a future built from the ruins of the past. She brings everything that I loved about The Island, her first novel, and transplanted it into a devastating story set during Spain's Civil War. I have very little knowledge of the Spanish civil war and therefor this book filled a big gap in my knowledge (well the gap is still there but not as big).
