Lilith laughs at the Cross, and evil triumphs in the end. It's a stereotype that every actor really wants to direct — and that a lot of those would-be filmmakers would be better off sticking to their roles in front of the camera. We're not yet in that brief golden period where Tales from the Crypt would run back-to-back with the nudity-heavy Dream On. Though the first season was short, it's a pithy slice of the series as a whole, with directors like Robert Zemeckis, Richard Donner, and Mary Lambert each helming one of the six episodes, and excellent character actors like Joe Pantoliano (as a carnival performer who literally dies on stage, again and again) and Amanda Plummer (playing an axe murderer long before her turn in So I Married An Axe Murderer) popping up along the way. Even still, Tales from the Crypt had already gotten its ghastly claws in many kids growing up in the 1950s, with a few of them growing up to become big Hollywood producers by the 1980s. But while Wertham won in the short term, driving EC Comics off the shelves, his crusade against its foul and funny stories only cemented their place in the cultural landscape. A Must Have for Tales From the Crypt Fans! The ironic twist: The pawnbroker can indeed restore her youth, but now that she's a murderer, she may be better off staying old and unrecognizable. Several practical monster effects remain surprisingly good, and creepy old homes, dangerous antiques, and spooky staircases join the slimy recently deceased or skeletons from the grave. Zemeckis took a crack at "And All Through the House, " the best-remembered segment of Freddie Francis' 1972 film in which a woman (Mary Ellen Trainor) is stalked by a psychopathic Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. Not just the usual seven, but other character vices like vanity, selfishness, infidelity, obsession, and a propensity for revenge. Now I'm watching them with my 16 year old daughter.
