Introduction, by Ronald Gottesman. Initially believing they have found the promised land of opportunity and plenty, they are quickly taken in by various schemes meant to impoverish, indebt, and enslave immigrants like them. Outrage joins with this moral superiority a certain smugness, since we feel outrage on behalf of others, about things that do not affect us personally, and so we can feel satisfied that we would never do something so egregious. ME: Oh, yeah, great, why don't we pass the meat that untold numbers of Slavik immigrants had to die to process? Grover Garner does an excellent narration. He's a tough negotiator, and not averse to greasing the palms of public officials when necessary, but he's not at all like his movie depiction; he's always fair to his workers and generally supportive though skeptical of his son's ideological meanderings. This book also has the distinction of changing America's political and social attitudes towards both the meat packing industry and the villainous Shere Khan. Dad is the business man, wanting more and more property to be able to produce more and more oil and therefore more and more money. Below I have included the beginning of this speech because I think it summarizes perfectly the life of our protagonist up to this point. When The Jungle was published, its readers were outraged—but not in the way Sinclair had hoped. I liked the first quarter better than the rest, when Bunny was a kid just hanging out with his dad and finding wonder in everything around him. I think that Upton Sinclair would be saddened to know, and maybe he did know, that the only thing that changed as a result of this beautifully written pro-socialist novel is that the middle class now has healthy meat products. Four stars, but that's only because there were times in the book when I noticed that the writing leaned so heavily on description (instead of action) as to be a little repetitive. Upton Sinclair has a message to deliver. Is one of my favorite American novels, because Sinclair was fascinated and bewildered by the beginnings of mass-consumer culture here in the U. S., and his descriptions here of oil rigs, cars, radios, jazz music, and Hollywood are very perceptive and eye-opening. Oil! by Upton Sinclair. With the hindsight of a hundred years, we can see that real-life socialist countries don't seem to have discovered a clearly superior method for resource extraction, but that doesn't make the imperial cruelty of the oil barons at the incredibly modest demands of the workers for simple wage increases any easier to swallow. Enough has been said about the differences between the novel and the film, so there's no need for me to chime in on that topic.

His remedy is Socialism & he preaches it relentlessly until the last 1/4 of the book devolved into pure party politics. The problem is not this point of view, but my sense that the text functions more as a social protest with an overemphasized message than a well-written novel. The opening chapter is a tour-de-force description of taking a 50 mph drive in those early days. Jurgis responds to these terrible working conditions by joining a labour union. I identified very much with Bunny, and Paul of the book. They've come to Chicago to make their forturne, only to find that life in the packing houses is not much better than slavery. Their lives are intertwined with the Wyatt family, a family of fundamentalist sheepherders, whose black sheep, Paul, is a freethinking pro-worker that Bunny idolizes. Sinclair is trying to bring light to the disgusting ways in which people in his time were forced to live, the way they were manipulated, ripped off, neglected and sometime even killed by the very community that profited from their cheap labor. More so, maybe, than when you went in. I rushed off and ordered a used copy and here we are. The problem is, though, that this book is not about the meat packing industry- the book is about the plight of a poor immigrant family in Chicago, and about the plight of poor people in the country in general at that time.
In a way his book is as flawed as our system. 'The Jungle' shows how persuasive fiction can actually lead to real world reform. For there are, of course, situations in which outrage is the only logical response—monstrous injustice and inhuman cruelty—and the working and living conditions in the meatpacking district was one of them. After awhile he returned to Chicago and lived through a variety of activities through which he learns about the workings of power in Chicago that contribute to making life difficult for working people like him. The novel, while containing an abundance of true events, is fictional. And so while it's admirable that the book had the kind of real-world influence that it did, its critics claim, that's really something more for history class than the world of the arts; and that the novel taken just on its own is actually pretty terrible, an overly serious doom-n-gloomer that never just makes its points when it can instead write those points down on a wooden two-by-four and then beat you in the back of the head repeatedly with it as hard as humanly possible. I feel that it is just their fractured moral compass that worships at the all-mighty dollar sign and occludes any proper appreciation of the nature of the humanity around them. One such study by Lindsay Reddington out of Columbia University even found that female college students are far more likely than males to jot down detailed notes in class, transcribe what professors say more accurately, and remember lecture content better. In fact, a host of cross-cultural studies show that females tend to be more conscientious than males. The outcome was remarkable. Since boys tend to be less conscientious than girls—more apt to space out and leave a completed assignment at home, more likely to fail to turn the page and complete the questions on the back—a distinct fairness issue comes into play when a boy's occasional lapse results in a low grade. At the same time, about 10 percent of the students who consistently obtained A's and B's did poorly on important tests. Doodling during a lecture for example crossword clé usb. As the new school year ramps up, teachers and parents need to be reminded of a well-kept secret: Across all grade levels and academic subjects, girls earn higher grades than boys. Of course, addressing the learning gap between boys and girls will require parents, teachers and school administrators to talk more openly about the ways each gender approaches classroom learning—and that difference itself remains a tender topic. In a 2006 landmark study, Martin Seligman and Angela Lee Duckworth found that middle-school girls edge out boys in overall self-discipline. The latest data from the Pew Research Center uses U. S. Getting good grades today is far more about keeping up with and producing quality homework—not to mention handing it in on time. When F grades and a resultant zero points are given for late or missing assignments, a student's C grade does not reflect his academic performance. Let's start with kindergarten. It mostly refers to disciplined behaviors like raising one's hand in class, waiting one's turn, paying attention, listening to and following teachers' instructions, and restraining oneself from blurting out answers. The whole enterprise of severely downgrading kids for such transgressions as occasionally being late to class, blurting out answers, doodling instead of taking notes, having a messy backpack, poking the kid in front, or forgetting to have parents sign a permission slip for a class trip, was revamped. Staff at Ellis Middle School also stopped factoring homework into a kid's grade. This last point was of particular interest to me. Gone are the days when you could blow off a series of homework assignments throughout the semester but pull through with a respectable grade by cramming for and acing that all-important mid-term exam.
They found that girls are more adept at "reading test instructions before proceeding to the questions, " "paying attention to a teacher rather than daydreaming, " "choosing homework over TV, " and "persisting on long-term assignments despite boredom and frustration. " I have learned to request a grade print-out in advance. An example of this is what occurred several years ago at Ellis Middle School, in Austin, Minnesota. This self-discipline edge for girls carries into middle-school and beyond. These researchers arrive at the following overarching conclusion: "The testing situation may underestimate girls' abilities, but the classroom may underestimate boys' abilities. Trained research assistants rated the kids' ability to follow the correct instruction and not be thrown off by a confounding one—in some cases, for instance, they were instructed to touch their toes every time they were asked to touch their heads. In one survey by Conni Campbell, associate dean of the School of Education at Point Loma Nazarene University, 84 percent of teachers did just that. But the educational tide may be turning in small ways that give boys more of a fighting chance. Girls' grade point averages across all subjects were higher than those of boys, even in basic and advanced math—which, again, are seen as traditional strongholds of boys. Tests could be retaken at any point in the semester, provided a student was up to date on homework.
In contrast, Kenney-Benson and some fellow academics provide evidence that the stress many girls experience in test situations can artificially lower their performance, giving a false reading of their true abilities. They are more performance-oriented. Not just in the United States, but across the globe, in countries as far afield as Norway and Hong Kong. As it turns out, kindergarten-age girls have far better self-regulation than boys.
