When the signal from one of the transmitters suddenly disappears, a team... His torn-up corpse rises, the girl panics, and at this instant you're expecting a chase; maybe the monster will be fully revealed, maybe only part of him, but there must be a chase of some sort. The budget only allowed for one fully-functioning costume (with Bottin himself actually wearing it) to be built so Barbara Peeters had to be smart with her utilization of it, with clever camera work and editing audiences are none the wiser to this fact. For the most part Humanoids is standard monster fare, the focus volleying back-and-forth between the humans attempting to comprehend the horror and the humanoids that are trying rather successfully to kill and impregnate. I mean, total chaos: the sound of people screaming lasts for something like a full twenty minutes. And lord knows at the time, given the competition at the theaters, a title like Humanoids from the Deep was irresistible. Ironically, after all the hubbub the new scenes were cut from the final release and Peters received full credit for a film that went on to become one of the most memorable and popular films in the New World library. Instead, the woman is - in an instance both affronting and yet remarkable in how unexpectedly it affronts - raped by the domineering humanoid. Even the poster is pretty rapey. I'm sure the producers of this film would be proud to be associated with those iconic Lovecraft influenced films. She's literally sitting through the entire twenty minute monster attack before she decides, "Oh, I should probably try to run away now. " Things seem just dandy there for a few minutes, at least until the head of the local Indian community, Johnny Eagle (Anthony Penya), files a lawsuit to stop the cannery and save his people's fishing rights. But perhaps this is the sort of film that is endorsed by mentions of its offenses, and the scene in question notwithstanding - its constructional resemblance to Jaws also notwithstanding - there remain aspects of the film that merit recommendation. But as with any brand, variety engenders progress, and by this measure Humanoids emerges as a creature feature with modest merits, obscured as they are beneath an ocean of influences. Oddly enough, this is something of a running theme in fish people-related horror stories, though this is a more explicitly rapey example than usual. The smart thing would be to leave ASAP and forget the remaining days at the B&B, but with Petri enchanted, it isn't so easy, and the cult makes their move.
