If there's an inner core to the global Ashtanga movement, it consists of senior teachers, now roughly between 50 and 70 years of age, who started practicing with Jois directly 30 years ago or more. Remski also names and eviscerates the many forms of subterfuge under which victim silencing occurs. This will likely be triggering for anyone who has experienced sexual or physical assault, but for the yoga and spiritual community, it begs the reader to apply critical thinking while joining ANY group and provides some questions to ask oneself when in doubt. The revelations of abuse in the Bihar tradition came to light with the work of the Royal Commission in 2014 and the response of the Bihar hierarchy was predictable and pathetic. Hardly a week goes by without my hearing from several practitioners who want to share their injury stories.
