The writing is captivating. Love Adam's previous works (trust me, this one is as amazing). In The First to Die at the End, readers are left with a cliff-hanger about how Death-Cast actually works. We regularly go through life not knowing how something works and just accept that it does. This book completely blew the original out of the water for me.
But also don't stop, it's incredible! Something that I have said from the beginning with these novels is that I will never write the same book over and over. Just finished The First to Die at the End, and I'm left with some really profound thoughts about life and the way you are living it. Orion, Valentino, and every other character that gets a dedicated POV each contain their own depths.

Death-Cast has always been somewhat of a mystery in Silvera's novels as he chooses to focus on the more intimate and personal stories. Some of the points of view are uncomfortable and unlikable -- like the unfeeling Death Cast operator whose trick to calling people is to consider them already dead, or Valentino's greedy, exploitative, and abusive super who hopes to capture a Decker's death on camera in order to sell it. I was definitely intrigued when I read that Adam Silvera has written a prequel to They Both Die At The End. I remember feeling sad at the end of THEY BOTH DIE, but I fought back sobs at the end of this one. Overall, abnormal, crazy and utterly weird are a few of the words I can think of to describe this book but I saw the trailer for the film the other day and though it looks tamer than the book, I will be seeing it. One gets to live, and the other one dies. Valentino living on through the boy he loved, who loved him, was fucking BEAUTIFUL.

Death-Cast's creator, Joaquin Rosa, also receives his own fair share of chapters. We finally got some answers how Death-Cast operates. My eyes burn from crying for hours. You know, the interviewer.
