Indian Staircase Trail Red River Gorge
While the climb up Cloud Splitter was manageable with the ropes provided at the site, the descent down sent chills up my spine. After packing up your camp you will retrace your route back towards the trailhead as you cover ~4. You'll reach the top and enjoy incredible views, including Indian Staircase down to your right. Despite skipping the ascent up Indian Staircase, this is still a fascinating hike to undertake filled with historical sights rarely seen by most folks.

If you're trying to make life easy, like most hikers, you'll turn left, follow the rock base around 20 or 30 steps, and come to a low ledge you can scramble up to. You can always simply go back the way you came! There is a smaller trail that loops to the bottom and over the top of this rock house which runs adjacent to the Indian Staircase Loop. Many have fallen to their deaths from the cliffs found in Red River Gorge. Cloudsplitter is a definite adventure. It is a deep canyon. For me I prefer the quiet and solitude that winter brings to the area. Make your way down past the staircase to reach a root section between some rocks. I look forward to another hike on this route, not only to venture into these unexplored areas, but also to give the staircase a better assessment without the first-time intimidation factor, and to take more photographs documenting the climb. The approach trail is well traveled so it is not too difficult to find the cutoff or follow the trail itself. It's one of those truly special experiences that's difficult to capture in words or photos and impossible to comprehend unless you're there in person to take it all in.

We hiked the Bison Way Trail (#210) to the Sheltowee Trace (#100) and followed that west to the unofficial, unmarked approach trail to Indian Staircase. Though there is no definitive proof, it is another widely held belief that prehistoric peoples built the trail and carved the notches atop Indian Staircase. We pulled ourselves to the first scramble, Katy and I both doubting our ability to climb back down, but I made it up half of the second scramble.
