The book opens in 2001 with Sonia, a young woman unhappy with her marriage to a much older man, a banker for whom marriage was only another task on his to-do list. She "returns" to know more about Mercedes, who she thinks is her mother. I was actually amazed by how much I remembered from reading The Island all those years ago, it was obviously a story that stayed with me. She brings everything that I loved about The Island, her first novel, and transplanted it into a devastating story set during Spain's Civil War. It is hard to believe that the Spaniards, that strike to me as very friendly easy going people, could engage in a war that killed around 500, 000 people. While on her trip she meets an elderly waiter at a cafe who tells her the story of the Ramirez family and the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s.

The magic of the first novel is missing but it is still a good read if rather clunky at times. It develops the later events of The Island by telling them from other characters points of view, as well as telling their on going story. I DIDN'T like this, not at all!!! The reason I love Victoria Hislop books and why she turned me onto historical fiction was because she writes fascinating fictional stories and characters based around true historical events. As the story develops we follow a new character, the passionate dancer Mercedes, a young girl in Andalusia at the time the war begins. Just like an appreciative audience watching a flamenco dancer tap and twirl or a bullfighter swing his cape, I say "Ole! Again part three I struggled with.

Hislop (The Island, 2007) uses the Ramírezes to symbolize and personalize the conflict. Hislop's descriptions are so vivid and piercing, much of the language stopped me dead in my tracks. It could have been shorter but it was still good. To me it seemed like a formula that didn't really work. During her brief initial visit to Granada, Sonia finds a spiritual home. I did not feel any real connection with the characters in this book and although I finished the book I was not compelled to pick this up at any opportunity. By: Elisabeth Hobbes.

The true story of the Spanish civil war needs to be told, but not like this. I don't understand why Hislop didn't just write the Ramirez family story; the fact that she needed to ensconce it in a modern envelope and then make that modern envelope so shallow diminished the rest of it. What makes the whole thing work is that although the reader gets a broad overview of the conflict, the focus remains on the family throughout. Seamlessly the story morphs into another tale.

I was suddenly reading their family story at the time of the Spanish civil war. The body of this book consists the story of the Ramirez family of Granada during the Spanish Republic, the Civil War and the ensuing years. Thankfully that didn't happen to us.
Two fans of salsa from the UK where they take regular classes, the young women spend a few days in Granada taking dance lessons as a birthday treat for one of them. A mother, whose past she knows nothing about. They want to dance in Spanish studios on a short course, as well as taking a break in the city. One of the best books I've listened to all year. A short story collection, One Cretan Evening, was published in September and both a third novel, The Thread is published in English in October and in Greek in November 2011. They run a cafe and for a while things are wonderful in their life.
