What a long drawn out reminder to NEVER surrender the old part until you know for certain the new one fits! It can be one side because you do not have a limited slip differential. If I lift that wheel high enough to make the axle straight, I can get it to come out slightly more, but it won't go back in any further than that. Any tricks into getting it all the way in or is this considered all the way in? Nothing seems to help. You've not compromised the safety of the axle either, you've just made the thing function right. Circlip to compress enough for it to go in fully. I was thinking that, but really there's no way it could come out. I had suspecdted the circlip so took it off and the axle slid into place, attempted to bend it down a bit but wasn't successful - didn't put it on from the end though so will give that a try. I tried putting the rear axle back into the differential it slid in but still has a little gap I tried hitting the other end of the axle to hit it in but wont move anyone got any ideas on how it can be done. 2007 Honda Civic LX, 120k mi. If its on warranty you can buy a new one, install it, bring back the old one, get the warranty replacement, and then return the replacement with your new one's receipt. I pulled it out and messed with it thinking maybe it was aligned weird and somehow made it worse. And yeah, like shinrin said, you gotta push them in from the side of the car, if you could push the lock ring in from under the car it wouldn't be much of a lock ring lol. I also tried putting the old cv axle back in the wheel assembly and it barely comes out the other end at all, even when it's all the way flush in the back. I've read of people having problems when the CV pulls out of the diff. I have lubricated it very well using white lithium grease then tried Red Line synthetic back to white lithium. Had to make 2 cuts though. I've tried turning both the axle and the diff to see if it had to be realigned and it didn't help. Since this isn't a friction surface I decided to de-burr it with a Dremel. Installing an in-line filter (see photo) for the transmission fluid. Axle won't pop back in!?! If you can compress it flat lower than the deep part of the spline I think your job is done. Did you replace just one side? I've removed everything including the strut to get a clean clear straight shot to "float" it in. After trying for a few more minutes, I tried to put the axle back in to see how hard that part was going to be. Tried all the tricks mentioned above without success.

I decided to try and disassemble the differential while it was still in the X5. Location: Anderson, SC, USA. It looks like the axle is right at the part where the inner C clip is in the rear diff. Also you can hit the axle in with a mini sledge hammer with a piece of wood between it if it's still being stubborn or put the axle nut on and put the socket over it and hit that. If you did the other side you can probably steal the snap ring from the other old one.
