That's right, the streets are about to be filled with scantily clad ladies. Johnson is considered a legend in paving the way for Black media. As popular, widely circulated print publications, the magazines ushered in a particular phenomenon of collection and display in black domestic spaces. Speaking of People: Ebony, Jet and Contemporary Art (Nov. 13, 2014–March 8, 2015) explores the ways contemporary artists use the leading African American magazines Ebony and Jet as a resource and inspiration. This platform informed the entire publication, not only its groundbreaking articles and features documenting the black experience in America and abroad, but also the advertisements, illustrations and graphic design. Ebony began publishing regularly just after the end of World War II while the smaller-sized Jet began in 1951 when African Americans in many regions still lived under racial segregation. These women had ranging career paths such as beauty consultants, college students, aspiring politicians, and musicians. It was as if John H. Johnson, the magazine's publisher, had decided to gift any black person born before 1975 with a subscription on the occasion of his or her 18th birthday, and folks just never got around to canceling it. The deal was shepherded by the presidents of the Ford and Mellon foundations. Johnson Publishing Company was founded in 1942 during the height of racial segregation in America. None of the outlets near us, in the half-black city that NPR calls home, was carrying it. JET magazine has cemented its place in the history of Black media as an influential giant. What was your inspiration? My fondest memories of Ebony and Jet magazine are from childhood trips with my dad to Mullin's Barbershop. In 2021, Michele Ghee was appointed CEO of JET & Ebony. Each issue featured a beautiful Black woman and a short bio about herself. The model debuted butterscotch-blonde color back in July, then she quickly went back to her brown strands. JET also came under fire along with the popular Essence magazine for promoting colorist ideals. Looks like Hot-lanta is about to get even hotter! When I was at that age where kids want to consume every written word, I would blow through those old issues of Jet by the pile. This weekend in Atlanta, Ga., aspiring women (over the age of 18) will get the chance to show JET what they've person. And until now, the only way to do so was by submitting an application and photos to the magazine via the mail or the Internet. To look back at its genesis is to realize how monumental a magazine like this was. There was always a long wait, so to keep us occupied the barber kept a coffee table piled high with magazines.
