For Patty and I, every vacation involves fly fishing and testing new fly fishing tackle. Earlier in the season, you could expect to have some fun offering egg patterns to the spawning whitefish. The stream has plenty of aquatic insects that hatch just about every month of the year as well as plenty of scuds for the trout to eat. The river also has plenty of these gamefish. Irrigation withdrawals and river blockages degraded the anadromous fish runs until they were extirpated. The average size is about eight to twelve inches but there are as many as 3000 fish per mile of water in some areas of the tailwater. At the shop we have lots of fly patterns hand picked for the Crooked River. Sparkle Duns and Gould's Shuckoff for dries will get it done. A fish thrashed around in the shallow water then it made several runs, with one nearly into the backing. I'm a believer that sometimes it pays to show the fish a fly they've never seen. Occasionally, one of those egg patterns will get inhaled by a rainbow taking advantage of the eggs being broadcast into the riffles by the whiteys.

Fishing pressure has been light and hatches were building pretty well before the fires and smoky sky took over. Caddis pupa is productive from mid-April until late September. Shelf ice has developed on many sections. That said, the best fishing conditions will be in the fall or early spring. Fishing faster water can be an excellent tactic to try and see where the trout are feeding.
