Drive Shaft Fell Off While Driving
Maybe I'm not the one to be giving advice....... A few taps rearward popped it right off. I have tried putting the car into gear, then spinning the driveshaft all the way around about 100 times now. I will do that tomorrow. Anytime we pulled the drive shaft out we would have to cut a a little off of the yolk to get it to fit back in. So I finally broke it free. The transfer case was ran dry and is now making all kinds of noises. Just take it to the shop. As long as you didn't get any dirt into the grease you may be ok. Axle/Gears: Ford 9"/31 spline spool/4. The motor mounts could be off front to back, especially if they have some wear to them.
In reply to Sharp: I am no expert, but it may not be terminal. If so you should be able to push it back up using a screwdriver or similar. Are you trying 2 different yokes? Does the slinger touch the transfer case hsg. Can't get driveshaft back in time. Try taking the bare yoke (stopper plug) and rotate it spline by spline and see if it will fit into the transmission. In reply to gethin_allen: Had to cut off the nut in the end but it turned out to be the bolt that was rubbish, nut had stripped the threads half way down and that's why it wouldn't come back off.
All the engine/trans mounts are new. That's pretty amazing, considering I will get a $20 refund from the O'Reilly u-joint I had, which the shop said was garbage. I just rebuilt motor, etc, and went to drop the motor and transmission back into the car, and cannot get the driveshaft to go back into the transmission. See that little cap on the end of the yoke? Yeah, I know that all too well, lol. While the other answer is basically correct, it really doesn't tell you why it does this. You have to tighten it up with quite a bit of torque to get past the nylon insert which later stops it coming loose due to vibration. Anyone got any ideas on this one? 8TQM, 5-Speed Swapped, 4. I guess I will place the chain on the transmission instead of the cross member and see if that does anything. The other side is already disconnected from the diff and I'm pulling with all my might and it won't budge. With a little wiggling I've had a spline shaft just slide easily right in.
