When he returns, he meets up with people from his past and encounters their children whilst working at the school. The action moves between present day and late summer 1992, the year Joe's younger sister disappeared. If you have read The Chalk Man (and if not then you definitely should, immediately! ) When I started reading The Taking of Annie Thorne (known as The Hiding Place in the US), it was with some trepidation, since the setup here feels very similar to Tudor's first book: the return to a small town where the protagonist grew up, flashbacks to a time when he was a teenager, and the sinister vibe that keeps the readers on their toes. Although, he doesn't get much of a welcome as old friends and enemies don't want him there bringing up old histories that could effect their lives.
Is it some strange hybrid of the two? The atmosphere of a rather desolate village is beautifully drawn, along with the hopelessness of a lot of its inhabitant, very good sympathetic background. The guy he owes is getting impatient. His life has been out of control since he was a teenager partly because he needed to know what happened to Annie and if heading back to the place that haunts him is the only way to find out, then so be it. The characters, the scenery, and the whole plot are so well thought out and executed. I couldn't put it down. The Taking of Annie Thorne is told in a dual timeline; we learn the history of the characters and what happened in the past, and we see some of those same characters back as adults. We know that Joe has arrived in Arnhill with an agenda so we're on our guard from the outset but I love the way that so much of the story is revealed through wonderful character portraits. Joe has to face old friends and enemies, what they did in the past and what is happening now. Joseph Thorne is a troubled man with a past. For me, the worst bit would have to be that once the story changed course it began to feel like a really bad retelling and I think the original had a lot more involved with it. Tudor's debut novel, The Chalk Man, is also still available. Sinister, creepy and told with impressive skill, C. Everyone thought the worst. After reading and thoroughly enjoying this author's first book I was really looking forward to this one and I wasn't disappointed! It offers an opportunity for Joseph Thorne to flee from serious gambling debts and apply for the teaching post - in the village where he spent his formative years. I should have known, this is an excellently crafted, spooky tale with characters that, within the fear and suspense, made me laugh out loud. He was bullied at school and in fact eventually joined the gang of bullies himself. Not a word out of place. He turns out to be a very complex character with very distinct character development between these two timelines. Packed with ominous insights and menacing images, our minds are taken to a macabre place, a place of nightmares and sleepless nights. You got to read this book, its scary and a few times I was hiding behind my hands lol not daring to read another line but obviously carried on anyway haha, seriously good book, it's thrilling and scary and also funny in parts. As a whole, this novel was a gripping tale on chasing ghosts. Well paced and perfectly plotted with a time line that goes back and forth, but not excessively. Initially set in modern day Nottinghamshire, as the story progresses you start to get parts of the 90s back story of when the protagonist's sister, Annie, went missing when she was 8 and he was 15.
