Perhaps this was because the author tried to conflate poetry and prose (she is a poet) and did so unsuccessfully. She depends largely, it seems, on Antonina Zabinski's diary to recount the goings on at the Warsaw zoo during the war, and I get the sense that Zabinski focused more on the zoo's animals and her family's pets, as well as her son's doings, than she did on the larger issues of the war in her writings. It was upsetting, but my daughter came away and agreed it was a really good film, yes probably not for young 12 and under, but if a child has an understanding of what happened in this period of history then watching with a parent would be a good idea. It doesn't help that Ackerman's own prose too often verges on the purple, with metaphors that feel forced and many times inappropriate for telling what's largely a stark war story. Let me preface by saying a) I love Diane Ackerman's previous works and b) I have a deep interest in holocaust history. It's a fascinating story, and well told. Every time they come in contact with a new individual—German, Russian, Polish, or Jewish—our story veers off on a side road where we learn about that person's background, history, hobbies, talents, etc. For those who know animals, this is pretty amazing, because elephants are one of the leading killers of men when something sets them off, like disturbing their baby. The eccentric operator, whom Jan and Antonina call Fox Man, turns out to be sympathetic to their cause.
