From the start, indeed from the title alone, the reader knows this story won't have a happy ending and the surprise, therefore, is in just how joyful and hopeful the story is in spite of and perhaps because of this. However, when the first round of calls come out, one of them receives a call and one of them doesn't. There were beautiful family and friendship elements in this book that made my heart sing. With They Both Die At The End, I cried silent tears and looked out the window from the train after finishing. I find this the most captivating factor of these stories, the fact that we are telling a tale already with the knowledge of its ending. Why is there that hope, if we know what's going to happen in the end? This prequel has a much deeper philosophy about life, and I love it.

Today I love being queer—it's one of my favorite things about myself. Silvera wrote the book so that a new reader could start with the prequel and then read the original novel. For those of you who haven't read the first book, the series is about people finding out that they are going to die from the Death Cast. I HAVE TO WAIT FOR BASICALLY ANOTHER YEAR????????? I love the universe so much. He's from the Bronx. References to Valentino's sister's car accident and some brief descriptions of it. The Death-Cast creator, Joaquin was another interesting plot to read about. This book goes back to the inception of the organization and focuses on the first call that is made that day the organization launches. When Mateo, who's a very shy and reserved guy, receives the call he panics and decides he's going to make the most of his last day, but he can't make himself go out of his apartment. He lost his parents during 9/11, and even though I didn't lose my parents that day, how he describes that day is 90 to 95% identical to what I experienced.

Not everything is peachy however, as the book explores some final regrets and sad moments as Valentino tries to reunite with his twin sister. Through switching POVs, Silvera takes the reader on a journey that shows how we influence the lives of those around us. If you've read Silvera's previous book They Both Die at the End, you'll know you're in for a thought-provoking, impactful read. What worked: Bittersweet and heartbreaking at times story of firsts that also is filled with hope.

For obvious reasons, a prequel seemed the path to go given the rather emotional trajectory of the first book. Silvera hit the nail on the head with that aspect that adds a great layer to Valentino. God, that scene when Death Cast was first introduced is so memorable to me. Especially tiny Rufus and tiny Mateo! For a long time, I wanted to rate this story four stars but the last part shattered my heart and mended it back together, full of love for those two boys. He just happens to be at the same place Valentino is when a shooting occurs. So the whole insta-love wasn't great, even though one of them thinks they are going to die.

" Both Orion and Valentino are Puerto Rican and gay. It's a sentiment that even alone would make me cry and Adam Silvera adds to this even more with his beautiful tales. Is it weird that I rated this book higher than the first one? There are no scripts. And obviously fans of TBDATE will love this but surprisingly i can also see people that didn't like that book like this one. They had great connection with each other. Jackson's debut is well-executed and surprises readers with a connective web of interesting characters and motives. While Rufus is very carefree and daring, Mateo is wary of the dangers in the world and closed. Despite the presumed inevitability of a fatal end to the central romance between Orion and Valentino, Silvera subverts the trope of punishing gay characters with violent tragedy. Though neither boy is certain how the day will end, they know they want to spend it together… even if that means their goodbye will be heartbreaking. He kinda lives alone since his dad is in a coma in the intensive care. I will never get over this series and I will fight anyone who has anything bad to say about this or TBDATE. Like, how do you elevate a story that happens first? This story (especially the ending) will hold a special place in my heart, because I truly cherished this book. He builds upon what he first introduced in TBDATE, providing more context to a world that had accepted (and embraced) Death-Cast as the norm. However…if you call me to tell me I'm gonna die today, you can just save the telephone bill.
